Seen this error when trying to use the Cisco client with Windows 8? The VPN Client driver has encountered an error.
The fix for me was pretty easy. Go into registry and go to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\vpnva
Check the DisplayName data value. On my installation, it had a bit of inf information before the actual name. So deleted that info, and was left with just Cisco AnyConnect VPN Virtual Miniport Adapter for Windows x64. Fired up the VPN Client and connected without any problems
Update November 21st:
The Cisco team has commented on my post, this is what they wrote:
For those having trouble with WIndows 8 resulting in Host Scan (Posture) failures, please ensure you are running
Host Scan 3.0MR10 or 3.1MR1 on your head-end (ASA). One of these versions (or later) is required for compatibility with Windows 8.
For those still having trouble with Windows 8, please ensure you are running 3.0MR10 or 3.1MR1 versions of AnyConnect.
AnyConnect 2.x has been EOL’ed and upgrading to a current AnyConnect version is the best way to ensure compatibility on Windows 8.
Additional information on Windows 8 compatibility can be found at: http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/security/vpn_client/anyconnect/anyconnect31/release/notes/anyconnect31rn.html#wp1099267

Thanks for this information, Tom! This was actually one of the “blocking” issues that was preventing me from moving one of my development systems over to Windows 8. I’m surprised that the solution was so simple, and really appreciate you taking the time to post it.

Thank you. This was a stopper for me as well. With this fix the connection works better now than it did with Windows 7 (at least the NAC agent doesn’t complain like it did with W7).

This worked for me. I kept getting the driver error found this fix and applied it to the registry. Didn’t have to reboot or restart anyconnect. Works fine now.

This sounds like an error in the install file. Try downloading again, and also check that it’s unblocked by looking at the properties of the file. If this doesn’t work I would try another version of the client. As you see from comments above, others have had issues with different versions

I’ve changed the value of the registry as the guide, but it does NOT work yet. I re-installed the client software via the lastest anyconnect-win-3.1.00495-web-deploy-k9.exe, it still show the same error:
Posture Assessment Failed:Hostscan Initialize error
So boring it is! I would go back to Windows 7 one more time.

I did this to make the client work originally, then our network team changed the router. The client version 3.0.10055 does not wok while the previous version 3.0.5080 did work.
Come on Cisco! Get it together!

Windows Key + R will give you Run prompt, and then you just type regedit and click OK

From the start/metro interface, just type regedit.
It’s a bit odd in Windows 8, that there is no visible prompt from Metro. Imagine though that when you are looking at the start screen, the Windows 7 search prompt is there. . .but just not visible.
