Got this problem trying to enable Lync for a AD user:
Sounded a bit familiar to issues I have seen with Exchange, and did a check on the security permissions on the AD Object for user. And as suspected, it did not include inheritance of permissions. Ticked that of, and no problem enabling Lync for the user
